Heal Your Gut Blueprint: How to Stop Chasing Quick Fixes and Heal Your Gut for Good

If you’ve ever stood in the supplement aisle Googling “best probiotic for bloating” while holding back the kind of tears that make employees ask “Are you okay, ma’am?” – you’re in the right place.

Or maybe you’ve tried every gut health trend the internet has told you to try: celery juice, warm lemon water, low FODMAP, bone broth, gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar and flour-free, joy-free…

All while wondering why your gut still feels like a lava lamp on a bad day.

If that’s you, it’s OK to take a deep breath.

Your gut’s not doomed and you’re not being dramatic, high-maintenance, or “just stressed.” You’re a human with a gut that’s trying to communicate something important and my job is to help you understand that message so you can actually heal instead of chasing symptom band-aids forever.

And that’s exactly what this post will help you do: understand why your past attempts didn’t work, what’s actually going on under the surface, and how to follow a clear, science-backed framework to resolve your gut issues for good.

Let’s get into it.

What Is a Root Cause (…and Why It’s Not as Complicated as It Sounds)?

Let’s define “root cause” without the jargon or the intimidating functional medicine energy.

A root cause is simply the underlying imbalance, dysfunction, or missing puzzle piece that’s driving your symptoms.

Think of it like:

  • Car dashboard lights: Putting a sticker over the warning light doesn’t fix the engine (though admittedly…tempting).

Your gut symptoms – bloat, constipation, reflux, diarrhea, stomach cramping, messy stools, even SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth)  – are the dashboard lights. They’re important signals your body is sending you, but they’re not the actual problem.

Common root causes I see every single day include:

  • Digestive dysfunction (low stomach acid, not enough enzymes, poor bile flow)
  • Motility issues (aka sluggish gut movement → bloat + constipation)
  • Suppressed/activated gut immune system hard, bloated belly after everything you eat? – this is usually why)
  • Stress (of any kind – busy, non-stop lifestyle; under-fueling/over-exercising; even moving or getting married)

Mini Root Cause Self-Check

Do you recognize yourself in any of these?

  • You feel bloated no matter what you eat or drink
  • You poop inconsistently or only with “help”
  • You’ve been on acid-reducing meds (like Pepcid, omeprazole, or Tums) for years
  • You’re exhausted, wired/can’t relax, or both
  • You wake up with a flat stomach, but feel 6 months pregnant by 5pm
  • Your stomach feels heavy after meals
  • You react to more and more foods over time
  • You often skip breakfast because you’re not feeling well or you’re not hungry
  • Cutting foods out helps at first, but it doesn’t last
  • Your iron blood labs keep coming back low, even though you eat enough iron-rich foods

This list is obviously not inclusive of every symptom pattern, but if you’re nodding your head…one of these root causes is absolutely driving the chaos. The good news is, it’s fixable!

Conventional vs. Root Cause Approaches

Before I walk you through my signature HEAL method, it’s important to understand why so many people stay stuck for years despite trying everything.

The Conventional Approach:

This is what most people experience first:

  • Designed to identify disease, not improve function
  • Focuses on symptom suppression (it’s like playing whack-a-mole every time a new one pops up)
  • Restrictive elimination diets (“Just do low FODMAP” or “try cutting out gluten and dairy”)
  • Generic probiotic suggestions or recommendations to increase fiber intake without ever asking how much you’re currently eating
  • Rushed 7–10 minute appointments
  • Leaving with a, “your labs are normal”…but you still feel awful

Now, to be clear, conventional medicine is incredible at diagnosing and treating serious disease. We need it. But it’s not built for chronic gut dysfunction.

The Root Cause Approach:

This is where we do things differently:

  • Personalized plan for your body and lifestyle
  • Addresses why your symptoms exist in the first place
  • Looks at how all systems interact
  • Supports your gut as a whole ecosystem

To put it frankly…if the conventional approach worked for long-term relief, I wouldn’t have a job and you wouldn’t be reading this blog post.

Why Your Past Protocols, Treatment Plans, and DIY Attempts Haven’t Worked

Let’s clear something up right now: You haven’t failed, the approaches you’ve tried have failed you.

Here are the most common reasons I see with my clients:

1. You didn’t accurately identify your root cause.

Not your fault – most people (including other well-meaning functional providers) get confused around what actually qualifies as a root cause.

For example, SIBO and IMO (intestinal methanogen overgrowth) are NOT root causes. This is why you may have gone through a round (or more) of rifaxamin or herbal antimicrobials and are still struggling with bloat, smelly gas, and bowel issues.

There’s a reason the SIBO developed in the first place and until you fix that, it’s going to keep coming back.

2. You were treating symptoms, not systems.

For example:

  • Bloating → stop eating broccoli and beans
  • Constipation → magnesium only
  • Reflux → pop an antacid

But none of these “solutions” are actually fixing the problem. Your symptoms are coded messages and it’s our job to be top tier gut CIA agents, so we can decode those messages and give the body what it’s asking for.

3. You were missing key data (or it’s out of context).

Without the right stool testing, symptom mapping, bloodwork, and initial assessment, you’re shooting in the dark. You might get lucky…but most people don’t.

And even if you’ve already run a GI MAP stool test, for example, it’s meaningless without the right interpretation. What are the overarching patterns telling us? How do these results fit into the context of the whole person? Did we figure out what’s “causing the fire” and what are we doing to put it out?

If your practitioner isn’t asking these questions, it’s time for an upgrade.

4. You didn’t support the foundations first.

Things like:

  • Eating to balance blood sugars
  • Diet diversity (especially plant diversity)
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Adequate hydration
  • Replenishing minerals
  • 10-15 min walks after meals
  • Getting 7+ hours of sleep every night
  • Allowing 20-30 min to eat each meal – without distractions

Supplements, antibiotics, elimination diets and fancy protocols can only hold down the fort for so long. I know these things aren’t sexy, but without them in place, nothing else “sticks.”

I share this with you from professional AND personal experience. When my bloat, constipation and SIBO were at their worst, I loved starting a new supplement protocol because it felt like I was doing something productive.

I was doing the thing I was told by my naturopath at the time would make me feel better. But that relief didn’t last. In fact, I ended up in another naturopath’s office a year later feeling just as bloated and backed up as ever.

It wasn’t until I finally learned about and strategically implemented a few foundational shifts that I was able to see relief that lasted longer than a couple months. And I see it in my clients too!

My most successful clients – I’m talking about the ones that are reaching out a year later to tell me how much better they STILL feel – are the ones that have made these simple, but impactful, shifts in their routines.

5. You jumped straight to antibiotics or antimicrobials.

A super common mistake – especially for people who think they have SIBO – because that’s what you’ve been told to do by your GI doc or naturopath.

Killing off bacteria BEFORE stabilizing digestion and creating a safe internal environment that’s begging to heal = bloating + relapse waiting to happen.

6. You followed protocols meant for someone else’s gut.

Your best friend, a Facebook post, a Reddit thread, your cousin who sells essential oils…none of this applies to your digestive tract.

Like I mentioned in #3, context matters. What works for someone else, might set off a flare for you because your medical history and root causes are different even though your symptoms are similar.

This is why finding personalized support from someone you trust is so important.

OK, let’s explore a real life example…

Real Example: Jamie

When Jamie came to me, she could go a whole 10 days without a single bowel movement at times.

She was understandably frustrated because she was doing everything right – eating regularly, drinking 100+ oz of water, staying active…but her stools were still hard, painful, or barely happening.

Within our first session, I identified the missing link: She was severely mineral-depleted.

Once we corrected that, her digestion finally worked. She went from 3-4 BMs per week to 2 healthy poops per day.

Your “missing piece” might be different, but everyone has one and it’s up to us to figure out what it is.

And the amazing thing is…it’s not that you haven’t worked hard enough or aren’t motivated enough to find a solution.

You just haven’t had a clear, strategic roadmap…until now.

Introducing the HEAL Framework

This is the exact process used inside the Heal Your Gut Blueprint 1:1 coaching program and with every private client.

It’s structured, strategic, and wildly effective – without being restrictive, overwhelming, or miserable.

Let’s break it down.

H – Honor the Foundations

Sexy? No.
Life-changing? Absolutely.

The foundation stage is all about building stability so your gut can actually heal. Because trying to treat an unstable gut is like trying to paint a house while the walls are falling down.

Key Foundations:

  • Eating to balance blood sugars (yes, eating enough, eating consistently, and eating balanced MATTERS)
  • Stress + nervous system regulation
  • Minerals (especially sodium, potassium, magnesium)
  • Adequate hydration (85-100 oz per day)
  • Sleep quality

When this step is skipped, EVERYTHING becomes harder: You can’t digest well, you can’t absorb nutrients, and treatments don’t “take.”

Quick Wins You Can Implement Today:

  1. Eat something with protein + fiber within 60 min of waking up so blood sugars stay stable all day long.
  2. Eat every 3-4 hours so digestion stays regulated.
  3. Go for a 10-15 min walk after meals to activate digestion and promote motility.
  4. Take 5 deep breaths before meals to turn on your rest-and-digest mode.

Simple. Not flashy. But absolutely essential.

E — Explore the Root Cause (Testing + Symptom Mapping)

Here’s where we stop guessing. Instead, we gather targeted data and interpret it in the context of your body.

Tools I Often Use:

  • GI-MAP stool testing for bacteria, yeast, parasites, inflammation, and digestion
  • HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) to assess mineral status + stress patterns
  • Blood work (interpreted using tighter, functional ranges)
  • Symptom patterns/timelines (this helps us see patterns conventional care misses)

I’ve said it once, but I’ll say it again – even if you’ve done one or more of these tests before, a test is only as good as its interpretation.

The magic is in understanding:

  • How your history explains your numbers
  • How your symptoms match your patterns
  • How your test results interact with one another
  • What needs to be addressed first, second, and third

Testing gives clarity → clarity leads to consistency → consistency creates results.

A — Align & Rebalance the Gut

This is the part most people think gut healing is, but it’s actually only one phase of a complete plan.

To “rebalance” means to correct what’s throwing off the healthy balance inside your gut, which includes things like:

  • Correcting bacterial or fungal overgrowths
  • Replenishing low beneficial/probiotic bacteria
  • Getting rid of gut infections like H. pylori, parasites, or e. coli
  • Correcting digestive insufficiencies (like poor bile flow for fat digestion, low pancreatic enzyme output, and low stomach acid)
  • Calming inflammation
  • Supporting a struggling gut immune system

This isn’t about:

  • Cycling through random supplements
  • Killing everything off
  • Chugging probiotics
  • Starving your gut with unsustainable elimination diets
  • Being perfect

It’s about creating an ecosystem where every system and mechanism has the tools it needs to successfully do the job it was designed to do.

L — Lock In Gut Integrity: Repair & Rebuild

This is the step 90% of people skip and often why symptoms return.

Once pathogens are removed, digestion is improved, and your gut microbiome is balanced, we need to repair the damage left behind and rebuild the actual structure of the gut. This phase is all about sustainability.

Key Elements:

  • Repairing the gut lining – bye bye “leaky gut”
  • Strengthening the immune system inside the gut
  • Supporting the gut-brain connection
  • Reintroducing foods confidently
  • Replenishing the probiotic/protective bacteria

Skipping this step is like tearing mold out of a wall and then immediately painting over it. You HAVE to rebuild before expecting your gut to behave like a happy, functional organ for years to come.

This is the stage where clients start to say things like: “I didn’t even realize how much my gut controlled my life until now.”

Everything starts working again — and stays that way.

Final Thoughts

Here’s what I want you to walk away with after reading this: your gut is not broken, mysterious, or beyond repair. Your symptoms are your body’s way of asking for support in a more targeted, strategic way. When you stop guessing and start following a complete, step-by-step, root-cause framework, real and lasting relief becomes not just possible, but expected.

You do not need more restriction, more random supplements, or another elimination diet that leaves you isolated and afraid to eat. What you need is clarity, a plan that actually fits your body/lifestyle, and guidance from someone who knows how to connect the dots between your symptoms, your history, and your gut’s biology.

This is exactly what the Heal Your Gut Blueprint 1:1 coaching is designed to provide. Inside the program, we use this same HEAL framework to create a personalized, step-by-step plan that addresses your foundations, uncovers your root cause, rebalances your gut, and locks in long-term healing so you can get back to living your life without giving your stomach a second thought.

If you are ready to stop chasing quick fixes and finally feel confident in your body again, I would love to support you. You can learn more about 1:1 coaching here and book a complimentary call so we can identify what’s keeping you stuck and map out your next steps together.

You do not have to figure this out on your own. With the right strategy and the right guide, your gut can heal – and stay healed.
